M I: Yes, the boot shaft is wide. I haven't measured it but I have large calves and the boot fits well around them with room to spare. Stephanie R: I think so my calves aren't small and I have plenty of room in these shoes. I think you should be fine. They also run a little big, about a half a size. L S: I would say it would depend on where the widest point of your calf hits inside the shaft of the boot. Because of the zip back there isn't a lot of stretch but, at the top where the buckle is, is elasticized it gives you some wiggle room. Now I'm only 5'1"so the top of the boot covers half my knee cap so I'm grateful to have that elastic buckle on the side. The boots are fitted, not slouchy, but very casual and comfortable. The mouth of the shaft is about 16" but there is a slight taper as you near the mid shaft. If you intend on only wearing with leggings or tights they'd fit. If you were hoping to wear jeans or slacks I would suggest another pair to more comfortably be able to tuck. They were a lil big so I put a pair of insoles in and they fit perfect and they give extra cushion. Which worked out great because they do not have a lot of cushion otherwise. In some cases, It can look cute with the zipper stopping about an inch or two towards the top. The buckle also loosens and allows some extra room. I would not recommend going up a whole size and a half, they will be too large on your feet. I usually wear a 9-91/2, and I'm really glad that I ordered these in a size 10. I think that they run a little small; I don't have particularly large calves either, and the width of the top of the boot is a little snug. The buckled leatherette are fairly trim- not too bulky- the buckles aren't overly large, so although the boot is in the riding style, it's a bit more sophisticated. I get many compliments on them. Based on how the photos compare and on what the zip back looks like compared to mine, I would say the zip back boots are a little beefier and the buckles look a little more motorcycle than equestrian.
